The Cat Who Went To Heaven

Elizabeth Coatsworth
(McMillian, Copyright 1958)
Winner of the John Newbery Medal for children's literature.

This story about a
poor artist in Japan whose housekeeper arrives home from the market one day with a calico
cat instead of food. Although upset at first at having another mouth to feed, the artist
grows to love the little cat who appears to be more than a mere cat. The housekeeper
declares that the cat will bring good luck and they name her "Good Fortune," a
name she quickly lives up to when a priest from the temple comes to hire the artist to
paint a portrait of Buddha. Good Fortune watches the artist work and seems to approve of
each stroke. In fact, when he adds a likeness of Good Fortune to the painting she fell
dead to happy to live another minute. The artist knew that because the cat had rejected
Buddha the priests would also reject his painting, but he would not change it out of his
love for Good Fortune. The priests vowed to burn his painting... until the miracle. This
beautiful book gives us a window into Japanese culture, love and miracles.

Caring
Ending the Life of an Animal Friend
by Mary & Herb Montgomery
(Montgomery Press - Copyright 1993)
Pets enrich our lives beyond
measure. They give us the comfort of their companionship. They
accept us without criticism or judgment. And they provide the one
thing that few people are able to give unconditional love.
No wonder then, that the decision to end the life of an
animal friend is so difficult. No wonder we put it off as long as
possible.
As you face the painful decision about euthanasia, be
assured that the trust your pet has in you is well-placed. The
compassion that compels you to end the life of your animal friend in a final
act of caring - a final act of love.
